Wellsville/East Liverpool

I remember a time not so long ago when this area flourished. People had real jobs and benefits, storefronts were open, the streets were busy most of the evening and if you wanted to see a movie there was a theater in EL. Now today you can drive downtown at nine o'clock and it looks like a ghostown. The difference between the seventies and this decade are amazing. No more movies, no more busy streets, no more good jobs. Its depressing as Hell.

What happened to those days? I doubt if good jobs will ever return to this area in our lifetimes. They have all gone to China or the Philippines and we get people wearing WalMart smocks making 6 bucks an hour in return. Where did we go wrong here?

1. Work ethic. I can remember a friend of mine who worked in a steel mill (now closed) saying "I only got 4 hours sleep at work last night". Whatever happened to 'a day's pay for a day's work' or how about a 'day's work for a day's pay'.

2. Be informed. Get involved. Go to your city, township, etc. meetings. Don't shoot your mouth off without knowing what you are talking about. Most people have never been to their local meetings. Let the people in charge know that we are watching. You can't do it from your couch.

I went to our local meeting to listen and ask questions to a Columbania County Commissioner explain why we needed a sales tax increase and I was the only person in the public seating area. Most local meetings are so poorly attended the press doesn't even show up.

3. Vote - vote - vote. If you don't like what's happening in your world, change it. As was once said, "Vote the bums out".

Most of those under 40 do not remember when the towns were bustling centers of commerce and culture. Their experience is that the action is at the malls and the suburbs. Literally, the don't know what they're missing. I don't think the demise of the cities has anything to do with jobs. People still work around here, and there is plenty of business activity in the suburbs. It's the "suburban mentality" that has ruined our cities. People want to drive from store to store and patronize the big chains. As for East Liverpool, the decision to build the high school on the hill in the 1970s had a great effect on the downtown. In fact, most of the decisions made by those in charge of the city during the 1960s and 70s virtually guaranteed the demise of the downtown. It's too bad you can't go back and correct things.
